Our Story:
“Mound City” was founded in 1917 by Mr. Ben Kessel. I purchased the company in Novemeber of 1973 from widow, Mrs. Kessel. The business was closed and had no inventory. Working as a engineer, I planned to build up the business and sell it. Since I had no experience in the business ordering merchandise was an ordeal, but we re-opened on December 3, 1973 in the middle of a national truck strike. Merchandise was not coming in on time, Since we received pecans, we filled the shelves with beautiful Georgia pecans.
The following year, we decided to franchise. I wrote the franchise (today it’s 65 pages) and we franchised four local stores. We roasted ALL of the nuts on site. They are extra special because we use only grade 1 fancy product. We buy directly from the grower if possible and directly from the importers when necessary. Our product can be easily identified because we toast to a nice solid color that enhances the flavor.
We carry every type of nut meat, offered raw, unsalted or salted in a variety of packaging, bags, gift boxes, jars and tins. We make our own fresh peanut butter to order, one pound at a time and hand dipped chocolates (it’s our Greek heritage) made by my Mom, Helen Smyrniotis.
